Light Therapy with bright light
Daylight is one of the strongest external stimuli for human brains to release certain hormones and messengers. This substances strongly influence our activities, emotions and our well-being. For light therapy, predominantly bright white light is used, which functions over the eyes and can influence the release of hormones as for instance serotonin. These complex processes only work properly if sufficiently strong light (starting from about 2.500 lux) is available for 0.5 - 2 hours per day.
Standard lamps normally achieve illuminance of about 500 lux - note that for therapeutic success, at least 2.500 lux are required!
During the treatment you can occupy yourself with other activities such as reading or writing. However, in order to guarantee the success of your light therapy you should at regular intervals (1-2 minutes) look directly into the light. Therefore, DAVITON® will remind you by emitting a 3 second acoustic signal every 90 seconds after switch-on. You only need to look directly into the light shower during this acoustic signal.
Daylight therapy equipment (light showers) is principally employed for treating:
- depressions, seasonal affective disorders (SAD)
- premenstrual syndrome (PMS)
- obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD)
- alcohol withdrawal syndrome
- chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS)
- schizophrenic diseases with depressive component
- non-seasonal affective disorders
- headache (about 50% of depressives suffer from headache and about 25% of headache patients are depressive)
Somme suppliers indicate illuminancies that are only realizable by virtually sticking to the device. Therefore, when acquiring a light therapy system, please consider how close you can imagine to sit in front of it and how much time you are willing to "invest" every day.
Our experience has shown us that a distance of less than about 40cm from the light shower is hardly realizable. At the same time, a treatment time of more than 1-1.5 hours/day is accepted by scarcely any user.
